14th Accused Arrested in ₹8.85 Crore Embezzlement Case of Nepanagar Citizen Credit Cooperative Society


Burhanpur (Nepanagar): Financial irregularities occurred in the Nepanagar Citizen Credit Cooperative Society Limited during the years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22. After a long investigation, the police have arrested the 14th accused, marking another breakthrough in the ₹8.85 crore embezzlement case that shook the cooperative sector of the region.

Overview of the Case

The Nepanagar Citizen Credit Cooperative Society Limited was found involved in large-scale financial irregularities over a period of five years. The embezzlement, totaling ₹8 crore 85 lakh 93 thousand 329, involved society employees, management members, and directors who allegedly misused funds meant for depositors and community development.

Arrest of the 14th Accused

The police have arrested Vijay Prakash Sharma (age 59), son of late Babulal Sharma,


resident of Teacher Colony, Nepanagar. He is the 14th accused in the case and had a reward of ₹3,000 announced on his arrest. Sharma had been absconding since the registration of the case but was successfully apprehended by the Nepanagar Police team after continuous efforts and surveillance.

Details of the Embezzlement

Between the financial years 2017–2022, officials and directors of the Citizen Credit Cooperative Society Limited were found to have embezzled a total of ₹8.85 crore from members’ deposits and society funds. The fraud was detected during a cooperative audit and later confirmed through internal and government investigations.

Filing of the Complaint

The case was formally registered at Nepanagar Police Station following a written complaint by Pandurang, son of Manikrao Sonawane, of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cooperatives, District Burhanpur. The report highlighted mismanagement and unauthorized withdrawals conducted by 16 individuals associated with the society.

List of Accused Individuals

A total of 16 people were identified in the investigation, including employees and directors of the society. So far, 14 have been arrested. The key accused include:

  • Subhash Yadav (Current Manager)
  • Mukesh Tayde (Accountant)
  • Shailesh Mandle (Then Manager, absconding)
  • Sudhir Mahajan (Accountant)
  • Subhash Patil (Vice President)
  • Ashok Chaudhary (Director)
  • Rajendra Sir (Director)
  • Suman Bai (Female Vice President)
  • Ramesh Singh (Director)
  • Vijay Kash Sharma (Clerk)
  • Bhimrao Wankhede (Director)
  • Vasant Pawar (Director)
  • Sandhya Singh (Member)
  • Yogesh Mahajan (Clerk)
  • Rakesh Jadhav (Clerk)

Among these, Subhash Yadav (Manager) passed away in 2023, while Shailesh Mandle remains absconding.

Police Investigation and Action

The case was thoroughly investigated under the supervision of Inspector Gyanu Jaiswal, Sub Inspector Kaliram Maurya, Sub Inspector Shahabuddin Qureshi, and R. Gajendra Rawat. Their joint efforts led to the successful arrest of the 14th accused. The authorities have also begun a search operation to locate the remaining absconding accused.

Leadership and Supervision

The investigation was conducted under the direct guidance of Superintendent of Police Devendra Patidar, Additional Superintendent of Police Antar Singh Kanesh, and SDOP Nepanagar Nirbhay Singh Alawa. The SP had earlier announced a reward for any information leading to the arrest of the absconding individuals.

Current Status of the Case

Out of the 16 accused, 14 have been arrested, one has passed away, and one is still absconding. The arrested individuals are currently being interrogated, and efforts are underway to trace the financial trail and recover the misappropriated funds. The case remains under judicial review, and further arrests are expected soon.
